Mrs. Fixit: Plaster Relief

June 21, 2008

This raised plaster treatment echoes old european architecture, and all you need is a stencil, a wide putty knife and some plaster compound.

Map out where you would like your designs and mark with a faint pencil or chalk line.

Tape your stencil firmly to the wall with painters tape.

Use your wide putty knife to smooth the plaster over the stencil so you have a nice coating but not too thick.

Once you're happy with the coverage remove the stencil.

Then let the compound dry according to the directions on the packaging. Once it's completely dry you can paint over the relief and it will stand out like embossing on your walls.

For even more interest and dimension, try color washing your wall with a couple of different tones. For more information on that technique, check out my website. I'm Mrs. Fixit and it's just that simple!
