Neighbor charged with raping 2 young girls

BROOKSIDE PARK, Del. - June 21, 2008 65-year-old Alva Calhoun of Chippendale Circle in Brookside Park was arrested today, charged with rape and related offenses after allegedly assaulting two young girls. The victims, who knew Calhoun as 'Uncle Al', were staying with him when the rapes are said to have occurred.

Shortly after 1:30 Friday morning, New Castle County Police responded to a residence in the unit block of Chippendale Circle for a report of a rape investigation. When they arrived officers were told four young girls had agreed to spend the night with their neighbor, Alva Calhoun. Calhoun routinely watches two of the girls during the summer months while their parents work during the day.

The investigation revealed that earlier in the day, Uncle Al requested the four neighborhood girls stay with him overnight at his residence. During the night, Calhoun sexually assaulted the girls while they were sleeping. The two victims then woke the other girls and they all fled to their homes and told their parents.

Alva Calhoun later turned himself in to police and now faces rape in the first degree, rape in the second degree, and four counts of unlawful sexual contact. He has been arraigned and committed to the Howard Young Prison after failing to post $100,000 secured bail.
