Bricks tumble off Center City building

CENTER CITY - June 23, 2008

A 100-foot brick wall gave way on the Roosevelt building, a 9-story-high building. Bricks began crashing to the sidewalk. Fortunately, by luck, nobody was walking on that sidewalk at the time.

Some bricks smashed out the rear window of a Honda. A railing also came loose, but did not fall to the ground.

If the mishap had occurred at night, customers from a tavern in the building would have been dining outdoors, where the bricks landed.

Officials havve not said what caused the accident. They theorize the old age of the building had something to do with it. The bricks were tied in by metal strips, which could have rotted out over time.
