Cops kill shooting suspect Calif. Freeway

ANAHEIM, Calif. - June 23, 2008 Two Anaheim police officers had responded to a hotel on Harbor Boulevard near Disneyland after reports of a man exposing himself to children Sunday morning.

When officers arrived, the suspect fired at them, hitting one officer in the leg, and fled.

The man believed to have shot the Anaheim police officer was spotted driving on the eastbound 91 shortly after midnight on Monday. Police pursued the suspect, who refused to stop, and the chase ended when he crashed into another car near the Brookhurst Street exit.

"As he's driving down the freeway here, traffic starts to back up. He collides with the vehicle in front of him because he was driving at such a high rate of speed he couldn't slow down," said Sgt. Tim Schmidt from the Anaheim Police Department.

Schmidt said after the collision, the suspect got out of his car with a handgun in the middle of the freeway and took cover around other vehicles stopped on the freeway.

After a confrontation with police, the suspect was shot and killed.

There were several witnesses of the shooting, and another female motorist was hit by bullets. Police were unsure if she was hit by police or suspect bullets. She was rushed to a local hospital and may be released later Monday.

Police said they are certain this was the same man involved in the shooting incident in Anaheim who exposed himself to people at a hotel.

The investigation is ongoing, and the 91 Freeway is expected to be shut down until at least noon.
