Overturned tractor trailer closes South 26th Street

Efforts under way to upright a tractor trailer that flipped over here on South 26th Street.

It happened shortly after midnight.

A tractor-trailer carrying boxes of what police are calling general merchandise flipped onto its side in the eastbound lanes of South 26th Street under the Penrose Avenue overpass.

The 57-year old driver was trapped inside his cab for about an hour-and-a-half before emergency personnel could get him out.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment. No word on his condition.

Unloading the truck has been completed and efforts to upright it have begun.

Westbound lanes of South 26th Street have just been reopened.
