Police ID hit and run victim

NEWPORT, Del. - July 6, 2008 It happened on Maryland Avenue, a sometimes-busy roadway with two lanes in both directions.

Police say 76 year old Robert Shum of Wilmington parked his car on the side of the road around 11:30 this morning, just like other people who were headed to the St Matthews Church.

Sadly, police say many churchgoers witnessed the horrible accident.

"There were several witness, but, apparently after the crash had happened, they were so horrified by the impact, they focused more on the victim than the vehicle that had fled the scene after the crash," Corporal Jeffrey Whitmarsh of the

Shum was transported to Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The fleeing vehicle is described as either a green Honda Civic or a green Chevrolet Malibu. The green might have a bluish tint. The driver might be a white or Hispanic male, late teens or early 20's, with light colored long hair.

According to the stunned witnesses, two teenage males or young adults were inside.

Police say the car may have minor front-end damage.

Anyone with information pertaining to this crash is asked to call investigators at 302-477-8501.
