Philly park worker to be fired for slacking

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - July 12, 2008 Mayor Michael Nutter is showing the door to Thomas Nace, a building maintenance supervisor, after a television news team spotted Nace doing personal business for 27 hours out of his 40-hour work week.

Nutter called a news conference Friday to warn all city workers against such abuse.

But he says the "overwhelming majority of public employees know how to conduct themselves, know what's right, know what's wrong, and know how to serve the public."

Nace was suspended without pay for 30 days, with intent to dismiss. He can appeal the decision to the Civil Service Commission.
