Man gets hand-transplant

Louisville, KY - July 15, 2008

Once a donor-arm became available, Dave Robert Armstrong was found to be a match. He was flown from California to Louisville.

Doctor Warren Breidenbach of the Jewish Hospital and Hand Care Center has led all four surgeries. He said, "We know it works. We're trying to gather information about how well it works and what modifications we should make."

The Defense Department paid for the novel surgery. The hope is it can help more people in the future, including servicemen wounded in the war. The latest transplant seems to be working, but doctors have to wait to see how the nerves and muscles respond.
