Downed wires close Route 202

EAST WHITELAND, Pa.

Officials say the crane knocked down the power lines just before 8:30 a.m. between Route 29 and Matthews Road.

Both PECO and Chester County emergency workers say the road will be closed for several hours, but could not give an exact repair estimate.

PECO tells Action News that no electricity customers in the region were affected by the downed power lines.

The construction work is part of the ongoing 202 widening project.

At about 8:20 this morning, the operator of this crane somehow managed to snare an overhead powerline.

The powerline is 19,000 volts and touched another line creating a 34,000 volt arc which came close to burning all the way through the cable.

Traffic has been detoured onto local roads for hours.

The crane won't be moved until a mechanical inspector takes a look at the boom brake to see if it was malfunctioning.
