Camden gets new top police brass

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - July 30, 2008 The force is getting a new director and a new chief, and will more than triple the amount of police officers it assigns to patrol its streets.

Louis Vega, a former assistant chief in Miami, is the new police director.

John Scott Thomson, a 14-year Camden police veteran who most recently served as the city's deputy chief, is the new chief of police.

Attorney General Anne Milgram says the level of violence in Camden remains unacceptably high. So far this year, there have been 34 homicides and 100 non-fatal shootings, many of them related to drugs or gangs.
