Doc: Fat Cat is a gender bender

BLACKWOOD, N.J. (AP) - July 31, 2008 "I didnt see anything. What'd you see? He's like us. He's a boy! Ohhh!"

While the 44 pound flabby feline continues his appearances on national TV shows, her owner has come forward, telling Action News the fat cat's real name is Powder.

Donna Oklatner says "He's a sweetheart. He's a little love, he really is."

Oklatner says she recently lost her home to foreclosure and couldn't afford to keep Powder. She turned him over to some friends, but says she has no idea how he wound up wandering the streets of Voorhees.

"I didn't want people to think I abandoned my animal, 'cause I would never in a million years. I'd give my life for my cats."

Now she hopes her tubby tabby can find a good home.

I want to have a place where he can rest for the rest of his life and people who will really love him and take care of him.

Volunteer Debbie Wright of Sicklerville is keeping an eye on Powder as he enjoys his 15 minutes of fame. Officials at the Camden Co. Animal Shelter have been getting calls all week with offers to adopt him. They'll make a decision about that sometime next week.

The largest tabby on record weighed 46 pounds, 15 ounces. That cat, who lived in Australia, died in the 1980s. The Guinness World Records has since dropped the category, fearing cat owners might harm their animals in an attempt to break the record.
