"Save A Life" success story

ABINGTON, PA. - August 4, 2008 Every year, 6abc helps fire departments obtain smoke detectors that are given to people who don't have working alarms. Earlier this year, the Weldon Fire Company installed two smoke detectors in an elderly man's home on Linden Avenue in Abington Township. Yesterday a fire broke out in the 89-year-old man's family room, while he was sleeping in a chair.

"He was alerted by the smoke detector he received thru Operation Save a Life," said deputy fire chief Jerry Gerhart.

The man got out safely.

Investigators believe a discarded cigarette started the fire.
