Storm damages Brandywine Zoo

WILMINGTON, Del. - August 11, 2008 -

Zoo Director Nancy Falasco says the animals are fine and the zoo is secure. However, power remains out, several trees were toppled and exhibits were damaged.

Falasco says most of the damage Sunday evening was caused by falling trees.

Falasco and her staff moved animals whose exhibits were damaged to the zoo's hospital. She says larger animals, including the Siberian tiger, are secure in holding areas behind their exhibits.

The roof of the hospital, a storage shed and the Sandhill Crane exhibit called "In Flight" were damaged. A backup generator is providing power to the hospital, the exotic animals house and the commissary.
