76ers C Jason Smith tears ACL in left knee

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - August 8, 2008 Smith, a second-year player out of Colorado State, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Wednesday during what the team called "normal basketball activity."

Smith averaged 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game as a rookie and played well in the Las Vegas Summer league, where he averaged 18.6 points and eight rebounds in five games for the 76ers.

A team doctor examined Smith on Thursday and he will get a second opinion in the coming weeks, according to the team. The team released no timetable for his recovery.
