Mrs. Fixit: Trimming Hedges

August 10, 2008

The tools of the trade are a power trimmer and a handheld trimmer. Plus, don't forget safety, glasses, hearing protection and gloves.

One of the hardest parts of trimming your hedge is to keep the top even and level. Before you start, set up a visual guide to work from, you could put stakes at either end of the hedge with a string at the height you want but i like using a ladder or step stool on both ends. It gives me a clear visual line to start from and end up at. and they're easier to move around than stakes and strings.

Work slowly and make sure that you keep your trimmer level while you work.

For the sides, the best approach is to have a hedge a little narrower at the top than at the bottom to ensure that those plants get enough sun exposure.

Use the ladder again for a handy visual aid for trimming those sides.

Once you've finished with the power trimmer, go back with the hand trimmer and get any strays.

I hope these tips help you with your hedges! I'm Mrs. Fixit and it's just that simple!
