Coons far ahead of Gordon in fundraising

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - August 17, 2008 Campaign finance reports filed last week show that Coons had more than $127,000 on hand for the reporting period ending Aug. 10. Gordon had just $3,600.

Gordon, who served two terms as county executive, says he "certainly could do a little bit better job raising money." But he says he's spent it wisely, and he notes that he doesn't need to increase his name recognition.

Coons says he's had about a dozen fundraisers in the past year, and he's pleased with the support he's received from a wide range of people.

Gordon and top aide Sherry Freebery were indicted in 2004 on federal corruption charges, but the case was dropped in exchange for lesser pleas. Gordon pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors, leaving him free to run for a third term.
