Upper Deerfield returns champions

UPPER DEERFIELD TWP., N.J. - August 17, 2008 In an interview with Action News, Coach Jim Willis, coach of Upper Deerfield for three years, tried to put this championship moment into words.

"Words can't describe it; what an awesome feeling. I'm so happy for these kids. I'm so happy for the community. What a turn out," Coach Willis said.

Two years ago, Upper Deerfield made it to the Junior League semi-finals, but this year, Coach Willis and his team weren't settling for that same spot. They were going to use what they learned and bring back a championship.

"Experience helped and two more years really helped the kids out. It helped us pull out the big games and we had three big games the last three days so it really helped us out a lot; you can't beat experience," Coach Willis said.

Willis and his players received the championship treatment as they arrived back in their hometown in style - in fire trucks.

There were plenty of hugs to go around for the new Senior League Champions.

Upper Deerfield defeated Willemstad, Curacao, 10-8 on Saturday. They held a 9-3 lead early on, but even though Willemstad came back to give U.S. East just a 9-8 lead, Upper Deerfield held on to come home champions.
