Free of medical debris, Avalon beach reopens

AVALON, N.J. (AP) - August 25, 2008 They were closed Saturday and Sunday because medical waste washed ashore.

Avalon spokesman Scott Wahl says inspectors combed the beach in the community about 27 miles southwest of Atlantic City early Monday morning.

They say it appears no new waste washed ashore with the high tide.

Over the weekend, some 150 hypodermic needles, several 8-inch cotton swabs and many blue pill casings were found on the beach.

Authorities are unsure of the source of the stuff.

Wahl says the state Attorney General's office is looking into that.
