Beached whale in Avalon

AVALON, N.J. - October 1, 2008 - The whale was found on the beach at 25th street.

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center responded, and said the whale was alive when it was beached.

However, it has since died.

The Center says it was a True's Beaked Whale, which is a deep sea animal. They are not known to go near the coast unless they are injured.

The head of the Smithsonian Institute Division of Marine Mammals will travel to New Jersey to help determine the cause of death.

At this time, investigators do not think the whalel was hit by a ship.
