Officer shot, K-9 killed after bank robbery

LOWER GWYNEDD, Pa. - October 22, 2008 - Investigators say around 10:35 a.m. Officer Louis Layfield and his K-9, "Andy," were deployed to track the suspects in the robbery of the Abington Bank in the 800 block of North Bethlehem Pike in Lower Gwynedd, Pa.

Police say, during the course of the apprehension, Officer Layfield was shot in the chest and K-9 Andy was killed.

Ofc. Layfield was treated and released from Mercy Suburban Hospital.

He was wearing a ballistic vest.

The department says Officer Layfield and K-9 Andy have been partners since January of 2005.

3 suspects were taken into custody for the bank robbery.
