Garbage is turning green

KEARNY, N.J. (AP) - October 27, 2008

Some garbage is turning green.

A landfill near the Meadowlands sports complex in northern New Jersey could be a glimpse into the furture of energy.

Decaying garbage in the dump is helping generate electricity to power thousands of homes.

Methane gas from the decomposing trash is used to fuel the generators.

The state Board of Public Utilities reports 21 landfills are producing methane for electric generation.

So, that half-eaten burrito you toss out today, might be powering your kids' homes in a generation.
