Police say about 2:30 Monday morning the vehicle hit a tree on Haddock Drive and Fish Pond Road in Washington Township, Gloucester County.
The impact threw two people from the SUV.
One of them died at the scene.
The other is being treated for minor injuries at Cooper Hospital.
The vehicle, itself, ended up in a backyard.
Police are trying to determine what caused the SUV to go out of control.
