6abc ACME IKEA Holiday Drive kicks off

BALA CYNWYD, Pa. - November 7, 2008 The 6abc Holiday Food Drive is back, collecting your cans, cartons, and cash donations at all 134 ACME supermarkets in the area.

"8 years together with 6abc, the Boy Scouts, ACME Markets, it's been a great relationship and it gets better and better every single year," Judy Spires, President of ACME Markets, said.

This year's drive is different. In addition to ACME, you can also make donations at area IKEA locations.

In 2007, the food drive collected nearly 64,000 pounds of food.

We're hoping to provide 75,000 meals to families in need, but we need your help!

"There are a lot of needy families out there that need food and that aren't necessarily as fortunate as we are," Sharlene Mallard of Northeast Philadelphia said.

"With the holidays coming i think a lot of people going to be in the attitude, why not give some food," Randy Herman of West Conshohocken said.

Action News personalities were on hand throughout the drive kickoff at the ACME on City Avenue in Bala Cynwyd. Swoop and the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders were also on hand.

Everyone who stopped by today got pictures, autographs, and other goodies to take home and their donations add up for more holiday meals.

"Just think of the people in need and one can will really make a difference," Spires said.

The holiday food drive kicked off today, but it's going on till the end of the year, so you can make your donations at any ACME or IKEA until December 31.
