100,000 flowers handed out in NY

NEW YORK (AP) - November 17, 2008

More than 100,000 roses and carnations grown in Colombia are being handed out on the city's streets as part of the Colombia, Land of Flowers campaign. It's part of an effort involving the Association of Colombian Flower Exporters and the Colombian Consulate to celebrate the success of the South American nation's flower industry.

Organizers say the roses and carnations will be distributed at Wall Street, Pennsylvania Station, Grand Central Terminal and Times Square on Monday.

The president of the exporters group says the flourishing Colombian flower industry has been so successful it's changed the country's social landscape. He says Colombia is the largest supplier of fresh flowers to the U.S. and exported nearly $1 billion worth last year.
