Lillo Brancato played a mobster on HBO's "The Sopranos" until his character was killed off.

Now the make-believe mobster is going on trial for the real life killing of an off-duty police officer after a burglary went bad. Jury selection starts today in New York.

A friend of Brancato's has already been found guilty of first-degree murder in the case.

Prosecutors say the slain officer lived next door to an apartment the two broke into to steal prescription drugs. When the officer tried to stop them, shots were exchanged. Brancato was hit twice and his friend six times.

The officer took a single shot to the chest.

Brancato's lawyers say the former actor was unarmed and not criminally responsible.
