Thieves rip through homes in broad daylight

MEDIA, Pa. - December 1, 2008

State Police in Delaware County are searching for people who have been knocking on doors in the Chadds Ford, Glen Mills, and Middletown areas and robbing the homes.

Most of the break-ins occurred in November. They include over $19,000 worth of jewelry taken from the Glen Mills home of an 82-year-old woman. Also, shotguns and jewelry were taken from a home on New Middletown Road in Middletown Township.

Trooper Jon Sunderline tells Action News, "It seems like groups of individuals who are working in tandem. They will go up to a house - they will just randomly find a house - go up, knock on the door. If nobody answers then that's their signal that possibly nobody's home. So usually, one person will act as a lookout and one or more individuals will go and kick in a door or break a window to gain access to the house."

Prescription drugs were also stolen. In one case the thieves even took a GE dryer from a shed.

Police say that there have been at least 5 home burglaries in the last couple of months and there have been similar burglaries in other townships in Delaware County.

If you have any information that could assist in the investigation you are urged to contact police.
