Wilmington police say an officer was injured when his cruiser was hit by an SUV running a red light. It happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of West Second and Adams streets in Wilmington.

Police say Sr. Cpl. Arthur Gliem was traveling west on Second Street through a green light when a Ford Explorer on Adams Street ran a red light and hit the cruiser, then rolled over.

Gliem and a 20-year-old passenger in the Explorer were taken to the Christiana Hospital. Gliem was treated and released and the passenger underwent surgery for a severe injury to his right arm.

Police say 19-year-old Edgar Garcia of New Castle was charged with driving under the influence, two counts of vehicular assault, driving without a license, consumption of alcohol by a minor and the red light violation.
