Police search for package snatchers

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - December 9, 2008

They're easy picking for thieves. And they're not hard to spot from a slow moving vehicle. Some thieves simply follow the delivery truck.

One homeowner gave Action News the video after a hidden camera caught a thief in action. The woman grabs a stack of packages the homeowner had left on the porch for /*UPS*/. The delivery driver later arrives and finds nothing to pick up as he drops off more packages.

The thieves have two things to their advantage.

  • They know people are buying stuff on line more than ever.
  • It's the holiday shopping season.
The police say there are things you can do to protect your deliveries: You can also ask to have the package left by the back door. UPS says the best protection is to require a signature for delivery, but that's not an option for people away at work all day.

The police are encouraging neighbors to watch out for each other.

In the meantime, Swarthmore police are hoping you can help them catch a thief. If you think you know the woman captured on video tape, they'd like to hear from you at (610) 543-0123.
