It's been a long journey since the days when Quincy Jones referred to Michael Jackson as "Smelly."

Jones says he called Jackson that when they were recording "Thriller" because that was Jackson's term for "funky."

Jones says he's sad that Jackson is not living up to his potential these days, but he figures Jackson is coming to grips with a lot of things.

He says Jackson used to apologize to him all the time for what he has done to his face, but Jones says that's "a very personal decision."

Jones has a new book out called "The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey and Passions."
