Matt and Matthews in the Coffee Shop
December 18, 2008 The former Phillies outfielder and current Phillies broadcaster known as "The Sarge" stopped by the Coffee Shop to talk about "Phillies Confidential: The Untold Inside Story of the 2008 Championship Season."
The pocket-sized collectible was written by Matthews and Scott Lauber, a Phillies beat writer for the Wilmington News Journal. It chronicles several important events during the run, from the team extending manager Charlie Manuel's contract after the 2007 season, to that last pitch by Brad Lidge in late October 2008 that sealed the World Series title.
Matthews talked to Matt O'Donnell about:
- his perceptions of the team as they gathered for spring training 2008.
- how much of a role the Mets infamous collapse played.
- what he feels was the key to winning it all.
- the mindset of a team having just won it all coming into a brand new season.
- the Phillies chances in 2009.
- whether the Sarge can still hit a Major League pitch.
