Man arrested in crash that killed firefighter

DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) - December 23, 2008 Police say 28-year-old Joseph Taye has been arraigned on charges including manslaughter, second-degree assault, driving on a revoked license, leaving the scene of a crash and failure to report a crash. Bail was set at $30,000.

Thirty-year-old firefighter Michelle Smith was killed Saturday evening while assisting an injured motorcyclist along U.S. Route 13 at School Lane. Police say Taye was driving a car that sideswiped a police car at the scene, went out of control and struck Smith and the motorcyclist. Taye left in a car that pulled up to the accident scene. That driver is still being sought.

Smith died Monday. The motorcyclist, 30-year-old Edward Reiss, of New Castle, is in stable but serious condition at Christiana Hospital.
