UPDATED: Lot gives away free Christmas trees

Slow sales at a Philadelphia Christmas Tree lot mean dozens of people will be getting their trees for free. The trees are tagged and ready, Johnny Mathis is belting out the music, the snowmen are dancing, but alas, there is trouble on this one tree lot.

Tommy Payne and Joe Gleason are awash in Chrismas trees. There are so many that they decided to just give away a forest of green.

It seems economic hard times makes a $50 fresh tree expendable for a lot of folks.

As of press time, there were around 92 of the 200 trees remaining to be given away for free.

Candice Vassallo came looking to buy, a nice little fir tree.

Candice left with a trimmed tree, ready for delivery, all for the cost of nothing, but the memories to come with it will be priceless.

The tree giveaway is located at 5100 Rochelle Avenue near the intersection with Sumac Street in the Wissahickon section of Philadelphia. See the map above.
