Details released in fatal Del. accident

MINQUADALE, Del. - January 1, 2009 - It happened around 6:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

Investigators say 68-year-old Kathleen Smith, of New Castle, was trying to cross US Route 13 near Hazeldell Road when she was hit by a Land Rover driven by 50-year-old Carol Redden, also of New Castle.

Smith was killed by the impact.

Police say Smith was wearing dark colored clothing, and was not carrying a light. Also, investigatorss say she was not crossing at a crosswalk, and the area was not lit.

No charges were filed against Ms. Redden.

According to police, neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the crash on either party.

Redden was wearing a seatbelt.
