Knife-wielding man shot by police dies

KENSINGTON - January 6, 2009 Police tell Action News that the man, Secundino Rivera , died shortly before noon.

Philadelphia police were called to the 2900 block of Kip Street in the city's Kensington section because of a reported argument between a landlady and a tenant.

Upon arrival police found the male tenant holding 2 butcher knives while arguing with the landlady.

Police ordered the man to drop the knives. That's when the man lunged at police with both knives. A 24th District officer fired his gun, striking the man in the chest.

The man was transported to Temple University Hospital by police in critical but stable condition.

Police believe the man was intoxicated.
