Person struck and killed identified

NEW CASTLE, Del. - January 6, 2009 The accident happened about 6:40 a.m., just south of the Route 273 intersection.

Police say a pedestrian, identified as 46-year-old Paula Carpenter, was struck and killed by three different vehicles in the northbound lanes.

Police say Carpenter was walking across the northbound lanes of US 13 just south of Lisa Drive when she walked directly into the path of a car.

After being hit, Carpenter landed in the roadway. She was then struck by two SUVs.

Investigators say it was dark at the time of the collision and Carpenter was not wearing reflective clothing or carrying a light.

Police say she was also nearly struck by other vehicles while she walked across the roadway. A witness reported she and another vehicle had to swerve to avoid her.

This crash remains under investigation. No charges are expected to be filed.

The northbound lanes were closed in the area for more than two hours and reopened about 9 a.m.
