Weak, disoriented and bruised California brown pelicans are being found in record numbers as far north as San Francisco and as far south as Baja California, Mexico.
Many of the pelicans have been found far from their homes. One was even found wandering on a runway at Los Angeles International Airport.
The executive director of the Northern California-based International Bird Rescue Research Center, Jay Holcomb says pelican blood samples and carcasses have been sent for analysis.
Holcomb says results of those laboratory tests are expected in about a week.
