Man killed in West Oak Lane fire

WEST OAK LANE - January 11, 2008 Crews responded to smoke and flames erupting from the basement of a row home located in the middle of the 6500 block of North Gratz Street just before 4:00 a.m.

Firefighters rushed to pull a 60-year-old man from the blaze who was later pronounced dead at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said, "The captain and his team went straight into rescue mode because they knew someone was inside. It was a heavy fire fight. This fire was under control in 37 minutes. We're just not pleased with the outcome."

Two firefighters also received minor injuries battling the blaze.

No word yet on what sparked the blaze.
