Easton's last Catholic elementary school closing

EASTON, Pa. (AP) - January 19, 2009

Easton Catholic will shut its doors in June, at the end of the school year.

Allentown Diocese officials say the school is the victim of slumping enrollment and mounting debts.

Students took home letters Friday notifying parents of the closing. The notice was also to be read at Masses at St. Anthony of Padua Church and Our Lady of Mercy Church, the two parishes that sponsor the school.

Easton Catholic includes kindergarten through eighth grades. Diocese spokesman Matt Kerr says 119 students are enrolled this year, 44 percent fewer than in 2000.

The diocese says the school has been operating at a deficit for years.

Easton Catholic was formed more than 30 years ago by combining three other schools.
