Flyers C Briere out at least 4 weeks after surgery

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - January 22, 2009 Briere had surgery to repair a nerve and will need a month to recover, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. He has missed the last 22 games with a groin strain.

Briere appeared ready to return to the Flyers last week after recording a goal and four assists in a three-game rehab assignment with the team's AHL affiliate. But he was still bothered by the injury and chose to have surgery.

"This not good news for us because of Danny's abilities offensively," Holmgren said. "It's certainly decent enough news that it's only going to be a month, but we'd all rather have him in the lineup."

Briere also had surgery in late October to repair a torn abdominal muscle. He suffered the groin injury against Tampa Bay on Dec. 2, his last game with the Flyers.

He has five goals and four assists in nine games. Last year, Briere had 31 goals and 41 assists.

Holmgren also said it is unclear if free agent Peter Forsberg would be able to return to the NHL from a foot injury that has kept him out of action since last season.

Philadelphia is third in the Atlantic Division at the All-Star break, two points behind division-leading New Jersey.
