Liberty's crown could reopen

The new Secretary of the Interior is paying a visit to Lady Liberty.

Ken Salazar is scheduled to tour the Statue of Liberty Friday with New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez to discuss reopening the statue's crown to visitors.

The crown has been closed since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks because the National Park Service says there is no way to evacuate visitors safely if there is an emergency.

The statue's base, pedestal and lower observation deck reopened in August 2004, after $20 million was spent to enhance fire safety.

Salazar and Menendez also are scheduled to discuss reopening a closed portion of Ellis Island.
