NJ Assembly considers bills to help veterans

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - January 25, 2009 The Military and Veterans' Affairs Committee will take up a measure tomorrow to establish a "Troops to College" program within the Commission on Higher Education.

The plan would help veterans make the transition from the military to the college classroom by pairing them with a veterans' assistance officers. They will help veterans with everything from school and financial aid applications to academic counseling.

A Senate version of the bill has been approved by the Education Committee.

Another bill before the legislature would create a special "Gold Star Parent" license plate for parents of troops killed while serving the country.
