High-speed toll system for I-78

EASTON, Pa. - January 27, 2009 - The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission has approved a new $10 million toll system that will allow motorists to pass through toll collection points at highway speeds - 55-60 mph - without stopping.

A violation enforcement system will also be included to read license plates and identify toll violators.

The same system also will be set up at the Interstate 80 toll bridge at Delaware Water Gap.

Commission spokesman Pete Peterson says implementation is expected to begin over the summer.

Work will start at the most heavily traveled bridges, including those at I-78, I-80 and U.S. Route 1.
