Poll: Jerseyans split on smoking in casinos

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - January 28, 2009 Forty-seven percent of those surveyed in a Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll released Wednesday say smoking should be allowed in some part of the casinos.

Other polls taken in recent years - before the bottom fell out of the economy - indicated stronger opposition to casino smoking.

An anti-smoking group says at least 16 states offer smoke-free gambling. Atlantic City currently restricts smoking to no more than 25 percent of the casino floor, an arrangement due to be reconsidered in October.

The survey of 841 adult residents statewide was conducted from Jan. 5 through Jan. 11 and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
