Fisherman killed in freak accident

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. (AP) - January 29, 2009 Officials say 53-year-old Bill Meldrum's legs got caught in a winch aboard the Lydia J while trawling the ocean bottom for yellowtail and flounder.

He died from massive blood loss despite intensive rescue efforts by state Marine Police and the Coast Guard.

Meldrum bought the boat 20 years ago. His wife says he died doing what he loved.
