Car careens into house in Claymont

CLAYMONT, Del. - January 31, 2009 Today's crash involved a single vehicle that crashed completely into a split level home that breached at least two rooms. A father and his two children, ages 4 and 7, where in the upstairs section of the home playing Legos at the time of the crash. They were not injured; however, two of the three occupants in the striking vehicle were.

Today at 1:54 p.m., County Police and Paramedics responded to a home in the unit block of Glenrock Drive for a report of a crash involving a vehicle into a home. When police arrived, they found the vehicle had completely breached the exterior wall and discovered three occupants were inside the car at the time of the crash. The driver and one of the passengers were transported to the Christiana Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.

The preliminary investigation has revealed the vehicle was traveling south on Glenrock Drive near a curve in the roadway when the driver lost control of the car and struck a trash can, fence, wooden landscaping ties and then the home.

The preliminary investigation has revealed the driver, a 20-year-old male, had ingested an illegal inhalant just prior to the crash. Charges are pending against the driver.

A New Castle County building inspector responded to the scene to assess the damage and found the home was unsafe for habitation. The home has been condemned until the repairs can be completed.
