1 killed in Gloucester County fire

WILLIAMSTOWN, N.J. - February 1, 2009 69-year-old Raymond W. Stock Jr. died in a Sunday morning fire in his home at on Hille Terrace in the Williamstown section of Monroe Township, New Jersey.

The fire, which began in a downstairs bedroom of the house in which Mr. Stock was the only resident, remains under investigation by the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.

It is not considered suspicious in origin.

Much of the house was heavily damaged by fire and smoke, with flames burning through the roof. There were no other injuries or damage to other structures.

The fire was reported by a neighbor who saw smoke coming from the two-story Cape Cod house on the first-floor bedroom side of the structure at about 10:45 a.m.

Another neighbor attempted to enter the house, but was driven back by smoke.

Investigators found a garden house, connected to an outside spigot that had been pulled into the house and down a hallway toward the downstairs bedroom, indicating Mr. Stock may have attempted to extinguish the fire.

Mr. Stock's body was found on the kitchen floor of the house. An examination of the body by the Gloucester County Medical Examiner's Office is scheduled for Monday.
