Infant death in motel ruled homicide

WILMINGTON - February 3, 2009 Police and emergency personnel were called to the Fairview Inn on Sunday where they found the child, identified as Jaylah Salam, unresponsive. The little girl was transported to AI DuPont Hospital for Children where she was pronounced dead.

The child was staying at the motel with her mother and mother's boyfriend, 21-year-old Kadeem Roads-White. Both of whom were present when the call for help was made.

According to court documents, Roads-White admitted to punching the child in the stomach with his fist, and that soon after punching her the the girl stopped crying.

Police also interviewed occupants of separate rooms at the motel who say they heard an argument coming from their room, and heard several "thuds" against connecting walls.

They say, after hearing the thuds, they did not hear any more crying. Those residents say they saw the mother walking to the room from the motel office after hearing the noise.

An autopsy was performed Monday afternoon. The State Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death was attributed to multiple blunt force trauma. The child was found to have had multiple internal injuries.

Roads-White, who was residing at the Fairview, was eventually linked to the death of the child. He has been formally charged with Murder by Abuse or Neglect of a Child.

He was arraigned and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $100,000.00 cash only bond.
