Battery company fined for safety violations

An eastern Pennsylvania battery manufacturer has been fined for workplace exposure to hazardous materials including lead. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration says Exide Technologies has been fined $102,000.

Federal officials say Exide's smelter at Hyde Park, in the Reading area 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia, had inadequate safety measures to reduce workers' exposure to chemicals including lead, arsenic and cadmium.

The Hyde Park smelter recycles lead for reuse in batteries.

OSHA spokeswoman Leni Fortson says Exide has contacted the U.S. Labor Department and expressed interest in working to address the matters.
