Sign isn't being greeted too warmly

Welcome to Pontiac.

But a new welcome city sign isn't being greeted too warmly by local history buffs.

Some sticklers for detail noticed the welcome sign has the wrong date for the founding of the Michigan city.

The sign was to say Pontiac was founded in 1861.

That's when it was incorporated as a city.

But the community was founded as a village in 1818.

The Oakland Press reports the wording will be corrected by the time the sign is officially unveiled this spring.
