GM to offer hourly employee buyouts

NEW YORK - February 3, 2009 - /*General Motors*/ spokesman Tony Sapienza says the buyouts will mainly target GM's 22,000 retirement-eligible hourly employees, though any union employee can take the offer.

GM employees were notified of the buyouts on Tuesday. Sapienza says the offer will consist of a car voucher and a one-time cash payment. He says employees will receive more specific details on Friday, and says the offer will be less generous than previous buyouts.

He says employees will have until March 24 to make a decision. The buyouts will be complete by April 1.

Detroit-based GM is scheduled to report January auto sales later Tuesday.

The General Motors plant outside Wilmington, Delaware currently has about 600 employees.

Currently there is no production being done at the plant. Employees will be returning to work there gradually on Feb. 23rd.

A spokesperson was not able to give an estimate of how many of them will be eligible for the buyout being offered.

The Wilmington plant makes the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Vue and GT Opal.

In the spring it will also make the hard top coup version of the Solstice. The company wide buyout is focusing on retirement eligible employees but is an option to all employees.
